Watt It Takes
with Shannon Miller

Shannon Miller is the Founder and CEO of Mainspring Energy, whose first-of-its-kind linear generator is revolutionizing flexible, on-site power for the 21st century. Emily sat down with Shannon to learn what it takes to redesign a generator from scratch, from convincing their first investors to take a bet on an unproven technology to how they landed their first customers, and about how they’re making the grid more reliable and resilient.

Mainspring Energy

Shannon Miller co-founded Mainspring in 2010 and has led the company as CEO from inception through commercial launch. A former National Science Foundation Fellow, Shannon received funding from the Global Climate Energy Project to advance her research at Stanford University on methods for improving efficiency of fuel conversion to electricity. In conducting this research, Shannon collaborated with Matt Svrcek to design and develop the early prototype that served as the foundation for Mainspring's linear generator technology. She holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Stanford and was recognized in 2012 by the MIT Technology Review as one of “35 Innovators Under 35.”
